Domme
Built out of necessity on a chalk cliff by Philip the Bold in the C12th, Domme is surely one of the most well built townships in the Dordogne region. Thought to be impregnable, the English and the French fought for it during the Hundred Years War ; the Protestants and the Catholics did likewise during the Wars of Religion. In addition to the town itself which has been preserved with good taste, there are also its grottoes highlighted by a variety of lighting techniques. The cave of Combre-Grenal was already visited by our pre-historic ancestors. If the panorama from the terrace of the Barre spans the whole region-a little piece of advice- wait until nightfall to gaze at Domme from the banks of the Dordogne. And as this halt is very agreeable, if you cannot resist the pleasure of canoeing down the river, you will have no trouble finding a canoe or kayak to hire. And, you may remember, it was here that Josephine Baker retired to raise her adopted children. The public garden, the city hall, several remarkable edifices from the 13th century, the bewildering caves and the museum of ‘Art and Tradition’, make Domme one of the ‘must sees’ of the Dordogne. |
